This page provides links to other sites which show you how to tie the knots you will learn in the Sail4Fun Program.

We have chosen the site Animated Knots by Grog for most knots, because the demonstrations of the knots are animated and you can see the knot being created. Just pass your mouse over the numbers at the bottom of the window, or you can just let the demo run at your preferred speed, using the controls at the top of the Window.

There are lots of other knots on this site, so grab a couple of lengths of rope and go exploring. Skip's favourite knot is the Hunter's Bend , or Rigger's Bend.  It is used for the same purpose as a reef knot, but is MUCH more secure, because it will never shake loose.

Shoelace Bow  [ A reef knot, in disguise. If it comes out as a Granny, start with "right over left", instead of "left over right"]

Bowline  (pronounced  Bowlin, as in Bowling )
- the "standard" method
- tying onto a ring, rail or saddle  Use this method any time you need to tie a bowline on a dinghy, for example, tying the mainsheet to the end of a Laser boom or tying your water bottle cord to the kicking strap.
