It is VERY important that you be able to estimate the wind speed out on the water.
Wind speed can be measured in various units. The Units we will use most are "KNOTS". One Knot is one nautical mile per hour. This is 1.85 Kilometres per hour.
There is a standard scale of wind speed ranges called the Beaufort Scale, named after the British naval officer who invented the scale. The Beaufort Scale starts a "O" (Zero) which is "Calm" and goes up to 12, which is Hurricane force winds.
The two documents below show you how to estimate wind speed. You need to recognise the wind speed in the range 0-5 on the Beaufort Scale.
